Accountability For Politicians? Hell Yes! And YouTubers? Nah.
By: Joy Marie Mann
I know it’s kind of ironic to see a YouTuber criticizing Youtubers, but hear me out. I’ve done about 600 live shows, so I’m well aware one can say something incorrect, or in a way it could’ve addressed better. At the risk of sounding trite, it’s part of being human. Unfortunately, some YouTubers have way too much hubris to ever admit being fallible. In fairness, why would they when their fans become fervent attackers in their defense, regardless if the criticism has merit? Continuously.
For instance, a youtuber posted a blatant lie as “BREAKING NEWS” on Twitter and instead of owning her “mistake” (or intentional clickbait), she used her over-inflated ego to publicly deflect and attack those who tried to correct her. I have zero respect for someone who refuses to acknowledge any of their faults. She decided she would rather continue pushing lies for 2 days, than dare admit she fucked up. Why is that ok? Would it still be ok if it were a YouTuber you make fun of? Why do we not expect more from those we “like”? Is being humble and real too much to ask? For many, it seems it is.
Sure sounds like some serious shit-libbery.
*Step One: Deflect
*Step Two: Block
*Step Three: Attack on live video to stoke ugliness and negativity in comments
*Step Four: Encourage bad-faith minions to perform mental-twister, personally go after, slander and gaslight those who dare criticize their YouTube deity
The same can be said for the YouTubers who blatantly accuse people of something without a single receipt. Why don’t the viewers ask for tangibles? Because they’d rather join in the attack, of course. Someone who is more comfortable lacking substance and commenting on commentary is gonna keep needing those clicks to feed their ego.. Who cares if it tears down people who volunteer their asses off, to better people’s lives. There’s something really repulsive about making capitol off of slandering and attacking a bunch of organizers and activists, and unjustly so.
But again; why would they stop when so many tune in for yet another fix? The “left” YouTubers have mostly become nothing more than an independent Jerry Springer show. It’s a “cool kids club” which I am more than ok not belonging to. The dumbing down of what once was an actual movement is so beyond tragic. All too many who began their shows with genuine intentions of fighting for change, have become insipid, click-bait craven shadows of who they once were.
As people with a platform, we have an incredible opportunity to platform people and stories which matter and I will continue to do that. Unfortunately, overall, I don’t find it feasible to “go back” to how independent media once was. Viewer’s dictate what shows cover and reality is, viewers find it much more entertaining to talk trash, than to talk about the eugenics of the poor, all too many have lost focus of.
